Lenovo Announces the Best 8 Inch Windows 8 Tablet

Lenovo, the world’s largest PC maker, has announced a new Windows 8 tablet which is not only the best one it currently makes, specs-wise, it is the best 8″ tablet running on Windows 8 in the world.

Starting with the display, the new ThinkPad 8′s 8″ display comes with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, the highest for such a tablet yet. It has lost its pen input though.

Under the hood, you get the new 28nm 2.4Ghz quad-core Intel Atom Bay Trail processor with 2 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage, which is expandable.

Connectivity options include microUSB 3.0 and miniHDMI, which will allow you to connect with any external display, along with optional 4G LTE support. A duo of 8 and 2 megapixel HD cameras can also be found at the back and front.

On the software side, the ThinkPad 8 runs on Windows 8.1, and comes with Microsoft Office pre-installed.

It will also come with two additional Quickshot Covers which protect the screen by attaching to it magnetically. It also features a neat trick where uncovering a part of the cover from the camera at the back automatically launches the snapping app.

Pricing starts at $399 which is a bit steep for an 8 inch tablet but puts it head-to-head with the iPad Mini 2. Considering that it is a full-blown tablet which you’re getting, the deal starts to make sense.

Lenovo Announces Successors to its Two Most-Popular Laptops Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Lenovo Yoga 2

Lenovo has announced the successors to its two most-popular Windows laptops at CES 2014, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Yoga 2.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The new flagship laptop by Lenovo still comes in an exotic carbon fiber package. It is also just 0.68″ thick and 2.8 pounds heavy. A 14″ display can still be found with 1600 x 900 resolution, but a touchscreen option with resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels can also be found.

Underneath, a Core i5 or i7 processor can be found, along with Intel’s HD 4400 Graphics, 4 GB worth memory and a 128 GB SSD (up to 512 GB can be brought).

Also you can get quite a few connectivity options, including HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 ports, mini DisplayPort and OneLink Pro. Lenovo has also added Voice Control, NFC and Gesture Control.

Yet, the biggest change in the new version of Lenovo’s popular Ultrabook comes in its keyboard. Gone are the legendary function keys from the top. Their place has been taken by a strip of capacitive keys, with options such as search, brightness, magnification, screenshot and more. And it is always adapting to the work you’re doing. The red TrackPoint is still there, and so is the button-less TrackPad.

The laptop is available for $1299 right now.

Lenovo Yoga 2

The Yoga is one of the company’s most popular line-ups and has seen an addition too. The new Yoga 2 lies in the mid-budget category and will be available in either 11 or 13 inch models.

The smaller model comes with full-blown Windows 8.1, touchscreen and a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. It is powered by an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor with a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM and 6 hour long battery life. It weighs around 2.9lbs and will be available for $529.

The larger 13 inch version will come with a touch-enabled display with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This Yoga 2 will be getting an Intel Core i5 processor with a 500 GB hybrid drive and 8 GB RAM. It weighs 3.5 pounds and will come at a much more tough-to-swallow, $999.

However, none of them will replace the older (and better) $1100 Yoga 2 Pro as of now.

Huawei Has Announced the Ascend Mate 2

Huawei has announced the successor to its popular first-gen Ascend Mate ultra-large smartphone, the Ascend Mate 2 4G.

On the surface, it may look the same with its 6.1″ 720p HD display, but on the inside, the hardware does have a boost.

The display also features Gorilla Glass coating. The design still remains quite commonplace though, with the phone being 9.5mm thick and 202g in weight.

What isn’t bland is the spec sheet. The processor is now available in two versions: either a SnapDragon 400 one clocked at 1.6Ghz or Huawei’s own HiSilicon Cortex-A9, with a Adreno 306. Amount of RAM is set at 2 GB, with 16 GB worth internal storage, along with a microSD card slot.

At the back is a 13 megapixel with f/2.0 aperture and 1080p Full HD video, coupled with a 5 mp camera at the front. For connectivity, you have microUSB 2.0, USB-OTG, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE and Bluetooth 4.0.

The phone is powered by a 4050 mAh battery. What’s more, is that it can also charge other phones. Here are the full specs:

  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Emotion UI
  • 6.1″ display with 720p resolution and Gorilla Glass
  • 9.5mm thick
  • Weight: 202g
  • 1.6Ghz SnapDragon 400 processor/Huawei HiSilicon Cortex-A9

  • 5 mp front-facing camera
  • microUSB 2.0, USB-OTG, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE and Bluetooth 4.0

Samsung Announces a New NotePRO and Three TabPRO Tablets

Samsung has announced 4 tablets at the CES 2014 in Las Vegas. These include the NotePRO 12.2 and the Galaxy TabPROs 8.4, 10.1 and 12.2.

The tablets include Samsung’s new homescreen interface called Magazine UI, which includes tiles of apps and your favourite content.

Galaxy NotePRO 12.2

As expected, the highlight of the bunch is the NotePro 12.2, which is the largest member of the entire Note line-up. As you would expect, it has an S-Pen slot at the back with the same leathery-finish on the back.

The display comes with a WQXGA resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Underneath, you’ll get either a SnapDragon 800 or Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa processor.

Alongside it will be Adreno 330, 3 GB RAM and 32 or 64 GB expandable storage. Towards the back is an 8 megapixel camera with Full HD video capture at either 60fps or 30fps, depending on the version.

Connectivity options include IR Blaster, microUSB 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0, with a 4G version being in the pipeline as well. The OS running is Android 4.4 KitKat.

Galaxy TabPRO 12.2, 10.1, 8.4

The remaining three tablets, the Galaxy TabPROs 12.2, 10.1 and 8.4 are all almost entirely the same, with the major difference amongst them being the varying screen sizes.

The largest of the lot, the Galaxy TabPRO 12.2 features specifications completely similar to the NotePRO 12.2, with a 12.2″ WQXGA resolution, SnapDragon 800/Exynos Octa 5 processor, 3 GB RAM, 32/64 GB expandable storage and an 8 megapixel rear-camera. There’s no S-Pen, of course.

The TabPRO 10.1 features a substantially smaller display, again with WQXGA, but this time with 2 GB RAM, 16/32 GB storage and 8220 mAh battery.

The TabPRO 8.4 also retains the maddeningly high resolution but there’s only one choice as for the processor here, the SnapDragon 800 one. The amount of battery storage is also smaller, at 4800 mAh.

The tablets  will be released in the first quarter of 2014. Pricing isn’t announced for either of them yet.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Smaller, Dustproof, Waterproof Phone with 21MP Camara

A bit late at following this trend, Sony has finally launched the minuscule version of its Z1 flagship, the Z1 Compact.

As you would expect from a “genuine” smaller flagship model, the Z1 Compact has a lot in common with its older sibling. Specs start with a 4.3″ 720p HD Triluminous display with 341 ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It also boasts an IP58 rating from its maker, which means it is dust-resistant and can take a dive in water (up to 1m) and remain there for 30 minutes.

Hardware is packing a punch as well. You get a quad-core Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2Ghz, 2 GB RAM, Adreno 330 GPU and 16 GB worth expandable storage. Towards the back, the same 20.7 megapixel camera with Flash can be found, which is also capable of doing 1080p Full HD videos.

A 2 mp HD camera can be found on the front. Connectivity options include NFC, USB-OTG, microUSB 2.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G LTE. A 2300 mAh battery powers the device up. The phone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Here are the full specs of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact:

  • Customized Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • 4.3″ Triluminous display with HD resolution, 341ppi
  • 9.4mm thick
  • Weight: 137g
  • 2.2Ghz quad-core Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 GPU
