Samsung Unveils Two Galaxy Mega Phones

Following its tradition of covering all the empty spots, Samsung, the current leader in the smartphone industry has unveiled yet another duo of smartphones with incredibly large displays. The phones, Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 are also named accordingly with their sizes.

Both of these handsets are in fact so big that they can easily put the Galaxy S IV to shame. And the Note II isn’t that far either.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

Galaxy-Mega-6.3

Here we are discussing the better of the two, the Mega 6.3 in detail.

Galaxy Mega 6.3 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean customized with Samsung’s Nature UX. Galaxy Mega 6.3 has also borrowed some of the software tricks from the Galaxy S4. The Mega 6.3 is equipped with a 6.3 inch display on the front with 720p HD resolution. The capacitive multitouch display is protected with Corning’s Gorilla Glass.

Under the hood is a dual-core 1.7Ghz Cortex A15 processor and (an unusual) 1.5GB of RAM. The internal storage is set at 8 or 16GBs which is expandable via a microSD card slot. At the back is a 8 megapixel camera along with a 1.9 megapixel camera at the front.

Connectivity options are quite a lot too. The Mega 6.3 supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, USB-on-the-go, NFC, IR Blaster, Wifi Hotspot and GPS. Despite all this rich package, the phone is just 8mm thick.

Here are the full specs of the smartphone:

  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean customized with Touchwiz UI
  • 6.3 inch display with 720p HD resolution
  • Weight: 199g
  • Just 8mm thick
  • 4G LTE supported
  • 1.7Ghz dual-core Cortex A15 processor
  • Mali-T604 GPU
  • 1.5GB RAM with 8/16 GB expandable storage
  • 8 megapixel back camera with LED Flash and HDR
  • 1.9 megapixel front camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, USB-OTG, NFC, IR Blaster, Wifi Hotspot, GPS
  • 3200 mAh battery

The phone will be available in May this year. No word on pricing has been given currently.

One thing to Note in this package is that the duo does not support the S-Pen. While one of Galaxy Note’s key selling features was this very thing, it will be interesting to see whether the Mega phones will be able to repeat its success without it.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8

Galaxy-Mega-5.8

The second of the ‘Mega’ phones unveiled by Samsung alongside the Mega 6.3 was the Mega 5.8. The phone is not exactly the cheaper version of the Mega 6.3 phone. Other than the obvious screen size, the phone is behind the smartphone in a number of ways.

To start off, the phone will come with a 5.8 inch display with pretty average qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, which will probably raise a lot of eyebrows. Just like the Galaxy Mega 6.3, the Mega 5.8 also follows the usual Galaxy S III design language. The phone is just 9mm thick and weighs 182 grams.

It runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean customized with Samsung’s Nature UX. Under the hood is a 1.4Ghz dual-core processor alongside 1.5GB of RAM. The amount of storage is set at 8GB which is expandable via a microSD card slot.

At the back is a 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, HDR mode and 1080p Full HD video recording. At the front is a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera. A dual-sim version of the phone will be available too.

Unfortunately though, a lot of features found in the Mega 6.3 are missing here. The software tricks of high-end Samsung smartphones are missing here and so are the high-profile connectivity options including NFC, LTE and IR Blaster.

Here are the full specs of the Mega 5.8:

  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean customized with Touchwiz UI
  • 5.8 inch display with qHD resolution
  • 9mm thick
  • Weight: 182grams
  • Optional dual-sim support
  • 1.4Ghz dual-core processor
  • 1.5GB RAM with 8GB expandable storage
  • 8 megapixel back camera with Full HD video recording
  • 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS, Wifi Hotspot
  • 2600 mAh battery

The phone will be available for release this May. Considering its specs sheet, it should be priced closer to the Galaxy Grand.

The list of connectivity options is quite modest too with 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, microUSB 2.0 and 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi. The battery which powers the phone up is 2300mAh big.

Here are the full specs of the ZTE Geek:

There’s no info on the pricing and availability of this phone currently but it should be available in third quarter of this year at least. This phone too, along with other capable flagships from less-known manufacturers has the ability to become a bestseller if it strikes the right chord with a perfect mix of features, reliability and swallow able price.

Rs. 1,000 Tax Imposed On Import of Every Cell Phone in Pakistan

Federal Board of Revenue has imposed a tax of Rs. 1,000 on every smartphone import and Rs. 500 on every feature phone that will be imported into the country.

An SRO issued by FBR said that “Government is pleased to direct” to charge sales tax on cell phones as following:

  • Rs. 1,000 per cellular mobile phone in case of a smart phone or Satellite phone, where the term smart phone means a cellular mobile phone having following characteristics:
    • 4GB or higher basic memory
    • Touch screen
    • Dual core or higher processor
    • 5 Megapixel or higher camera
    • iOS, Android version 2.3, Android Gingerbird or higher, Blackberry, Windows 8 phones or higher
  • Rs. 500 per cell phone in case other than smart phone or satellite phone

Here is the copy of original SRO issued by FBR:

fbr-sro-280I-2013

Under these directions, every phone – which is a touch screen or has a 5MP camera or above – will be charged at a tax rate of Rs. 1,000.

Estimates suggest that FBR is likely to make Rs. 5 billion per annum with this new tax. It merits mentioning here that FBR is short of annual tax collection target of Rs 2.381 trillion and this is probably why it is unfolding every possible avenue to get its target.

Market sources say that even the cheapest cell phones – those imported from China – will come under the tax net and prices for a Rs. 2,000 phone will go up to Rs. 3,000 to 3,500 on average.

The step is likely to increase the cell phone prices in Pakistan by Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 and those who had stocks available with them are going to make several billions of rupees after this decision. The whole burden is to be endured by the end users of telecom sector who are already paying highest tax rates amongst all sectors.

Increase in tax is also going to promote illegal channels of bringing cell phones into the country, hurting the revenues of main stream mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia and Samsung.

Commerce bodies and importers have already protested the decision and have demanded the government to withdraw the SRO.

It maybe recalled that government of Pakistan had imposed Rs. 500 sales tax on every imported phone, which was latter cut to Rs. 250 per phone amid industry demands.

Samsung Announces the WiFi Version of the Galaxy Camera

GALAXY-Camera-pair

Last year, we heard about the Galaxy Camera, a point-and-shoot camera by Samsung which runs on Android 4.1 customized with Touchwiz UI. The only problem with the camera was that only a 3G/4G version of it was available which meant higher prices, lower battery life and lack of usability in a lot of areas around the world.

These issues are set to be solved now with the Wifi version of the camera which will be available later this month. The camera will cost $449 which is not that far from the $499 that the 4G version of the camera costs currently, but will nevertheless come with some benefits.

It should be released worldwide later this year.

In case you’ve forgotten, the Galaxy camera comes with 4.8 inch HD screen, 16mp camera with Xenon Flash, Full HD video recording, quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. It sure is quite big by today’s point-and-shoot standards with dimensions of 128.7 x 70.8 x 19.1 mm and you can find a better DSLR of the same size and with a better price tag without the bells and whistles of Samsung’s product but if Android is a must, this is the best that you can get as of now.

The Galaxy Camera can be bought online easily with a price tag of around Rs. 40K.

Here are the specs of the gadget:

  • 16.3 mp back camera with pop-up Xenon Flash
  • 21X Optical Zoom and Optical Image stabilization
  • Full HD 1080p video recording at 30fps, 720p video at 30 or 60fps
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Touchwiz UI
  • 19.1mm thick weighing in at 300g
  • 4.8 inch HD touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2
  • 1.4 Ghz quad-core processor Cortex A9 processor
  • 1GB RAM with 4GB expandable internal storage
  • 3G sim card slot for SMS and MMS (but calls aren’t supported)
  • 1650 mAh battery
  • Wifi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0
  • Available in White, Black, Pink and Orange flavors
