BlackBerry Announces the New Smartphone Z30

blackberry-z30

While the BB10 OS was meant to turn the smartphone battle into a four-horse race, the response of the phones running it so far has been lukewarm. Lack of quality apps and high price have plagued the sales of the OS and as the market has become more and more saturated with time, there’s really not that much of a need for another mobile OS.

Still, the company has taken to the challenge by announcing its 4th smartphone running BB10 called the Z30. The smartphone isn’t radically different from the Z10 and comes with a larger display and SnapDragon S4 Pro processor.

The design of the phone is based on the Z10 and comes with no hardware buttons at the front. The 5 inch 720p display takes up a large part of it with the speaker, front 2 mp HD camera and a notification LED at the top. The display is a Super AMOLED panel.

The processor inside is of Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro variety, clocked at 1.7Ghz. It’s followed by 2 GB of RAM, Adreno 320 GPU and 16 GB of storage, which also happens to be expandable this time.

The camera at the back is the same 8 megapixel unit with LED Flash and 1080p Full HD video. For connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi and LTE are used.

There are some minor changes compared to the previous smartphones though. Running OS version 10.2, it comes with BB Priority Hub which is BlackBerry’s take on Gmail’s Priority Inbox and this time, the BB10 messages can be sent without having to close the current running app. Incoming messages can be seen directly from the lockscreen, while support for Wi-Fi Direct and multiple alarms is also home.

The 10.2 update is coming to the Q10 and Z10 smartphones in October.

Here are the full specs of the BlackBerry Z30:

  • BlackBerry 10.2 OS running
  • 5 inch 720p display with 1280 x 720 resolution
  • 9.4mm thick
  • 1.7Ghz Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro, Adreno 320
  • 2 GB RAM with 16GB expandable storage
  • 8 megapixel back-camera with LED Flash, f2.2 aperture and 1080p Full HD video recording
  • 2 megapixel HD front-camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi, LTE
  • 2880 mAh battery

The phone is expected to hit the markets in the coming few weeks. Pricing is unknown as of now.

47,000 Apps One-Third of the Total on BlackBerry World Are From One Developer

Blackberry-World

Every new OS which comes out in the market faces a major issue in the form of low apps. This is something which somewhat plagues the sales of Windows Phone and other smaller operating systems but BlackBerry seems to have found a way.

A new report tells us that over one-third of the apps in the BlackBerry World come from a single developer called S4BB. When it comes to larger apps from the developer, it’s fine but when you come down to the less popular one, that’s where the real problem starts.

The apps (out of 47,000 from this developer) vary from audiobooks to ebooks, and from cityguides to what not. In a nutshell, most of them actually aren’t apps at all.

If you take out these 47,000 apps from a total no. of 120,000 apps on the store, you’re left with only 73,000 apps. This figure alone tells us that for BlackBerry, quantity means much more than quality.

You may not like Microsoft for some wrong things they’ve been doing lately but the approach they’ve taken for Windows Phone Marketplace is miles better. Not every store is safe from the wrath of poor, useless apps but Windows Phone is way better, this, in a time when the platform is gulping for breath and desperately lacking vital apps.

It’s sad to see sometimes how renowned companies are so madly attracted to being in the numbers race.

At the back, is a 5 megapixel camera with Full HD 1080p video recording. At the front is a 2 megapixel HD camera. For the connectivity, the phone uses Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, Wifi Hotspot and optional NFC. It also supports LTE.

Here are the full specs of the BlackBerry Q5:

  • Blackberry 10 OS
  • 3.1 inch display with resolution of 720 x 720 pixels

The phone will be available from today for a price of about $400 and should be hitting more markets soon. The price should come down quickly too, or at least that is what we hope happens, otherwise this phone will be a really tough sell, given the pressure of not only Androids, but also Windows Phones and the cheaper iPhones.

Blackberry to Launch BBM for Android and iOS

BBM

BBM, Blackberry’s signature instant messaging service, will be available for Android and IOS users later this year. With this all Android, iOS and Blackberry devices will be able to cross-communicate using BB10’s feature rich BBM services.

There are over 60 million active BBM users using blackberry devices, who will now be able to connect with their cross-platform friends from Android and iOS.

With this announcement, Blackberry has shown its confident over BB10 – its latest OS release for blackberry devices, however, at the same time company is giving away its one of most handy tools to other operating systems.

This move from Blackberry also hints that firm – once used to be the monopoly in smartphones – is now starting to think about integrating its services with other platforms, which is a good thing.

Blackberry said that app will be free for both Android and iOS users, while iOS 6 and Ice Cream Sandwich will be required to run BBM.

Blackberry said that app will feature messaging and group services initially, however, with time all BBM features will be added for Android and iOS users. BBM has lately started offering screen sharing, BBM voice, video.

BBM for Android and iOS will offer:

  • The immediacy of BBM chats
  • Multi-person chats
  • Voice note sharing
  • BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more

WhatsApp is Coming For BlackBerry 10 OS after all

whatsapp-logo

WhatsApp,most  probably the biggest instant messaging client on smartphones is coming to the new BlackBerry 10 OS after all. The app is already available on other major platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Symbian, Nokia S40 and BlackBerry (OS versions before BB10). The app comes at an important time for the platform when the users are still bemoaning the lack of quality applications on the operating system.

Other than sending messages, WhatsApp also allows the user to send pictures, audio and video messages along with the option of group chatting. The app deals with 10 billion messages worldwide.

Also somewhat plagued by security issues, I still think its a welcome addition to the BlackBerry World which most users will whole-heartedly appreciate. The app will be coming to the new OS sometime in March.
